Combating weeds

weedcontrolIts now the time to get control of your weeds. As every gardening enthusiasts realizes, weeds are a menace to any garden. I have provided a couple simple tips to help stay ahead of potential weed problems.

The key tip is to apply an affective weed control at an ideal time.  The goal is to stop the weed before it has a chance to germinate.  Remember, apply your barrier and weed control herbicide early in the season, March or April.  This will help eliminate a lot of work later.

How to remove residue from your clay pots.

Minerals, salts and the elements often cause a white build up on your terra-cotta pots. To remove the residue, left from a long winter, on your clay pots, combine equal parts water, white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Pour into a spray bottle and gently shake. Spray the mixture onto each pot generously and scrub with a plastic brush. After deposits are removed wipe with a watered cloth. Let the pot dry before you plant anything in it.

Get a head start on preparing your garden for spring!  Before plants can thrive with bloom and vigor, it will need some preparation and general maintenance.  Many perennials need to maintain foliage for protection against the harsh winter weather.  However, as Spring nears, it is time to clean and prune the old brown foliage. Remember, the sooner you can remove the old foliage the quicker you can expect new foliage to appear.

Fertilize your garden in late April or when the soil temperature comes up to temperature.  A slow-release granular is recommended.  We prefer to use OSMOCOTE.  Generally a cap full will service a 4′ x 4′ area. Each application will last about three months,
